8 Surprising Video Game Villain Turns You Never Saw Coming

6. Marlene - The Last Of Us

Thanks to the morally-grey nature of The Last of Us, there aren't really cut-and-dry bad guys. Except from maybe David, everyone (including Joel) has their reasons for doing monstrous things, and there's no moustache-twirling puppet master behind the scenes concocting a plan for world domination.

However, because everyone feels so human, it makes their last-minute betrayals even more affecting. This is evident in Marlene in particular, the leader of the freedom fighter group the Fireflies, who seems to be one of the few people trying to make the world a better place.

She's stern and uncompromising, yes, but she's the one who gives the player Ellie in the first place, taking a bullet to get the girl (who she considers something of an adopted daughter) to the Firefly HQ in the hopes of saving the world.

However, her dedication to the mission proves stronger than her dedication to her guardianship over Ellie though, and she readily agrees to sacrifice her in order to maybe cure an already dead world, even pulling a gun on Joel in the process.
