8 Surprising Video Game Villain Turns You Never Saw Coming

5. Liquid Snake - Metal Gear Solid

Metal Gear Solid
Konami

The long history of Metal Gear Solid has given the world enough villain reveals to take up this entire list, but few would challenge Liquid Snake's betrayal from the first game for the top spot.

Throughout the title you're repeatedly put into codec conversations with other members of Foxhound who aren't active in the field, giving you advice on how to proceed and take down your clone brother, Liquid. Master Miller is one of the most prominent voices, giving you important information and marking your objectives through early stretches of the title.

However, it's then revealed that Master Miller was Liquid Snake in disguise the whole time, playing you like a damn fiddle in order to acquire a series of detonation codes he couldn't otherwise get his hands on. The moment itself isn't delivered in a flashy cutscene, but through a simple conversation that somehow makes the scene even more tense, as you're hanging on his every word.
