8 Things Steam OS Needs To Become An Alternative To Windows

2. Great Game Performance

This is practically a must. By now, everybody knows that Windows is a mess held together only by the user's meticulous handling of Task Manager and the magic chant often referred to as the "crowbar to the hard drive". Jokes aside, Linux has the potential of being at the very least 30% faster than Windows 7, and that's because it can be free of all the unecessary tasks that are seemingly omniscient on Microsoft's OS. What we're talking about here is a specifically crafted gaming system designed for extracting every ounce of power out of any given hardware at any moment. The new drivers based on OpenGL could blow DirectX out of the water with the likes of ATi's Mantle drivers. That isn't all that hard to accomplish, but Windows is simply too cluttered and complicated for something like this to work as it should. There will always be bottlenecks in Microsoft's system, and Valve is looking to avoid them in SteamOS. Another fairly interesting thing is that there are screenshots of Valve's new engine €“ Source 2 €“ circling the Web. It's supposedly running exclusively on OpenGL and it looks absolutely stunning. There's a bright future waiting for us, the only question is how far ahead.
