8. Parking The Bus

Picture this: it’s the 44th minute of the first half and it's 0-0. You have been dominating the game and it’s surely just a matter of time before that elusive goal comes. Your team have just won themselves a corner. The centre backs head into to the penalty area to try and get the breakthrough goal. A newly packed Ozil is on the corner. He whips a fantastic ball in the box which your striker heads directly in the hands of the grateful goalkeeper. The opponent sends the ball long immediately and before you know it, the opponent's striker is away. He skins the last hapless centre midfielder on the halfway line, and runs past your keeper to score a great breakaway goal, 0-1. The referee immediately blows the whistle for halftime.

Okay fair enough, this is football and as Leicester will testify, counter attacking football can be deadly. But, to your horror you notice the stats. You have had 8 shots on target, sixty percent possession and eighty eight percent passing accuracy. Your opponent has had one shot, one shot on target and one goal. You dust yourself down and think okay they got lucky, but the second half will be mine… Six minutes later, the referee blows the whistle for full time the final score 0-1 - your opponent's shot stats exactly the same… Yours have doubled.

The explanation? Your opponent reverts to a five at the back formation and spends the entire second half on park the bus. Every attack down the wing is thwarted, every time you pass down the centre the midfield is too crowded and every shot you get on target is stopped by a wonder save. Whilst going to a defensive tactic with a slender lead near the end of a game is completely understandable. But for an entire half!? To spend a whole half of football, with your team on all out attack with nothing to show for it... well, that's just infuriating.
