8 Times Gaming Critics Got It Completely Wrong

4. Any "Games As A Live Service" Title

It might seem a little strange to put what amounts to so many titles under this one banner here on this list, but let me explain.

With the current gaming industry moving away from a sole title being a fixed piece of media that might get expansions plugged in and updates to patch out bugs and such, and more towards titles that evolve as roadmaps add in content and entire features are added, removed, tweaked and hopefully perfected, it's become harder and harder for review outlets to provide a concrete impression of what fans are actually going to be receiving.

For example, take the controversy surrounding Activision adding in MTX's into Crash Team Racing and Call Of Duty after the review window for both games. This might not seem that big a deal but if these features were a part of the initial launch version, I'm sure that critics would have marked both down as a result. Therefore by withholding these mechanics and letting reviewers whip up the crowd with positive scores, Activision scored big on goodwill before trying to rake our wallets clean.

All in all, this means that critics didn't give an accurate impression of what the games actually came to reflect, through no fault of their own I might add, but it means that you can look at the multitude of 9's and 10's that come out for newer games and realize that the game critics reviewed are almost totally different to the one you're playing right now!
