8 Times Video Game Violence Went Too Far This Generation

7. Dishonored 2's Extreme Finishing Moves

The original Dishonored was a violent game, but it never went too far with its depictions of gore. The sequel however ramped up the intensity of the combat to 11, allowing players to cut off limbs and completely mutilate foes with a swift flick of the wrist.

While the cartoon aesthetic allowed Dishonored to get away with its violence a little bit though, there's no denying that the ability to brutally dismember and decapitate people was sort of at odds with the world the developers created.

The binary morality system in the sequel often boiled the game down to a pacifist nonlethal play-style and an evil murderous one, but the extreme executions meant that there was no ethical middle ground for players to fall between.

Killing enemies meant that you also had to be a rampaging, bloodthirsty serial killer, which obviously promoted the pacifistic approach as the 'good' way to to play the game.

Extreme gore is a staple of video games, but in the case of Dishonored 2 it wasn't needed, and only took away from its otherwise brilliantly constructed world.
