8 Un-Killable Video Game Enemies (You Can Totally Kill)

3. Guardian Ape / Headless Ape - Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

Now, I know what you're thinking. The Guardian Ape is fought twice as a full-fledged boss in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice - three times if you count the first encounter's second 'Headless' phase - and each time, you seem to very unambiguously end its life.

Surely, the fact alone that there's a second boss fight should tell you that you didn't.

If you've been paying attention to item descriptions and backtracking to places you've already been, you will learn that the Guardian Ape is actually immortal in its current condition - even despite you chopping off its head.

This is because its body is infested by a huge centipede, impervious to any normal weapon, and therefore will revive every time it is defeated to be controlled again by its invasive parasite.

The only way to kill the ape for good, whether or not you've already completed the two boss fights, is with the Mortal Blade, a weapon with the power to sever the hold that these near-immortal centipedes have on their hosts.

Without the Mortal Blade, the second boss fight will end with the exposed centipede writhing from within the Headless Ape's body. Only by coming back later with the weapon in question can you end this insidious insect once and for all, and spare its host the agony of such artificially prolonged life.
