4. Zeus - God Of War Series

As revenge stories go, there aren't many out there that stretch over three massive instalments, and that's usually because the villain gets their just desserts after the end of the first one.

Not in God of War, for the big bad of the original trilogy sticks around for almost as long as Kratos himself.

Zeus is the father of Kratos (and basically everyone else), and becomes consumed by fear after Kratos opens Pandora's Box, turning the once benevolent ruler into a totally irredeemable all-round a-hole.

His villainous role begins properly in God of War II, although there's one pretty big snag in Kratos's plan to give the bearded tyrant the closest shave he's ever had: the Flame of Olympus makes Zeus basically immortal.

As the only way to kill a god, the Flame contains Pandora's Box, and Kratos must open it to sever Zeus's immortality. Although the box is empty when he gets there, that doesn't stop him, and an epic battle ensues.

In the end, Zeus's spirit leaves his body, but, finally accepting of his past transgressions, Kratos forces it back in and proceeds to beat his father to death with his bare hands.

Vengeance don't come much more satisfying than that.
