Perhaps the worst kept secret in video games these days is that Rocksteady Studios is working on a Superman game. What certainly is not a secret, however, is the not-so-insignificant fact that there has never been anything even close to a good Superman game.

Rocksteady changed the superhero video game landscape in 2009 when it released Batman: Arkham Asylum. If any studio is capable of giving us our first great Superman game, it has to be Rocksteady.

What will an open-world Superman game look like? Will the story be a more grounded, personal one, with Smallville and a villain like Lex Luthor? Or will it be more out there, set in space with a villain like Brainiac or General Zod? Will it feature a fully-powered Superman with flying, heat vision, and ice breath? Or will he be younger, less powerful, and thus vulnerable?

There's any number of ways a developer could go with Superman. The hero has been around for 80 years and is a well of material to choose from. If done correctly, a Superman game could be something truly special, and there's every reason to believe Rocksteady will finally crack the code, just as it did nine years ago.
