In one fell swoop, Final Fantasy fans had both their dreams come true - and then instantly dashed - when the remake of the seventh game was announced at E3 2015.

Because while an updated version of everyone's favourite release in the series is still definitely coming, Square Enix has decided that it's going to be more of a re-imagining than a straight remake.

The developers have decided to 'update' the game for modern audiences, removing the classic turn-based combat of the original and instead replacing it with the frenetic 'live action' gameplay of Final Fantasy XV. It's a fine system in itself - but it's seemingly only there to please people who've never played this game before.

Likewise, the devs have decided to split up the title into different episodes, planning to drip-feed content to players for potentially years. Rather than dropping as one full nostalgic experience that could make a huge splash, Square is instead planning to string fans along as they finish individual sections of the game.

It might have worked if that was the only change, but combined with the radical gameplay shift the new approach can only result in plenty of disappointed die-hard fans when it eventually drops (probably in about 2025).
