When you wake up with a hangover so bad that you literally can't remember who you are, you probably know that the very concept of trust has been smashed to pieces, as after all if you can't be sure anything is real or what the division between truth and fiction is, how are you going to get the record straightened?

Such is the pickle (both liver and situation) that Harry Dubois of Disco Elysium fame finds himself in, with the mass quantities of alcohol he's ingested tearing his brain to pieces.

However, the concept of trust is one that is played with even more thanks to the game featuring a mechanic that both rewards and punishes you for "trusting" your instincts. You see by making certain choices you'll level up certain parts of your brain, in turn rebuilding your psyche and unlocking new abilities and conversational skills.

Yet, this carries with it an underlying cost to pay, that by relying on these facets of your mind over and over, you're forming a connection that removes conscious effort, and soon your body and brain may act for you rather than you deciding what to do.

This can, and almost always will result in Harry making the situation worse for everyone involved, and all you can do is meekly apologize and try to balance the spinning plates of his broken mind. It's a fascinating examination of player reliance on certain skills and one you won't soon forget.
