It can be pretty difficult to create a video game that revolves around modern warfare that doesn't get political. In fact some people would probably argue that it's impossible, seeing as it's pretty difficult to not take some form of stance when making a war-based FPS. Even outside of the FPS genre, if you set your game in a version of the modern day, it's bound to get political in some sense.

Despite this, developers still try to claim a sense of neutrality when making these games. It's tiresome because the games would arguably be considerably better if they tried to explore the complicated political webs they're apart of.

Take the Tom Clancy series of games for example. The creative director came out and said the game wasn't making any political commentary, despite the fact the game was set in a near future America where America was on the brink of a civil war. On the other hand the developers of Watch Dogs: Legion claim that they are well aware of the political setting they're exploring, with advancing technologies and Brexit Britain, but we're yet to see if these are just baseless words to sell the game.

It's just cowardly to take a stance of neutrality when tackling such political topics, not wanting to ruffle any feathers while still banking on the inevitable controversies.

Speaking of controversies...
