8 Video Game "Gifts" That Made You Say HUMBUG
7. Pendant - Dark Souls
Because it isn't enough that Dark Souls is just really bloody hard, FromSoftware also got a kick out of offering players a total non-entity of a starter gift right out of the gate.
While creating your character, you'll be able to choose one of several gifts to get your playthrough off on the right foot, and among more obviously useful items is the Pendant.
Now in fairness, the item description tells no lies, straight-up informing you that the pendant is "a simple pendant with no effect," though the description goes on to be a little more cryptic, noting, "pleasant memories are crucial to survival on arduous journeys."
This naturally led some players to believe that the pendant had a special, secret property to help them through the adventure, and it didn't help that director Hidetaka Miyazaki heavily implied that there was more to the trinket than meets the eye.
But alas, after a year of fans being left clueless about the pendant's true utility, Miyazaki finally admitted that he was pranking them the whole time, and it actually amounted to diddly squat.
