2. Caim - Drakengard 2 (2006)

When you play as a character as angry and vengeful as Caim, you do get the feeling it's only a matter of time before they get tired of being a good guy. Even as you watch him do all manner of unspeakable things, though, you just can't help but root for the tragic character.

After his parents were devoured by the Black Dragon, Caim changed from an innocent and generous boy into a bitter and rage-filled adult. The pleasure he gets from killing is worrying enough in the first game, despite his constant claims that he's only doing it to avenge his family.

But over the 18-year gap between Drakengard and Drakengard 2, the man is betrayed by Manah, the unstable woman he's tasked with watching, and, his bloodlust returning, sets about hunting pretty much everyone else in the game, particularly the Knights of the Seal.

In a game series with multiple choices and endings, Caim can meet his end in a fair few ways. And while he was never much of a good guy in the first place, seeing him go full-on mental in the second game is still more than a little disheartening.
