There's nothing more tragic than a character held up as the purest of heroes being corrupted by darkness and losing themselves to evil. This is exactly what happens to Aidan, Prince of Khanduras and son of the late King Leoric, after he tries to rid the world of Diablo.

By plunging Diablo's soulstone into his head, Aidan hoped to be able to contain the Lord of Terror within himself. Inevitably, though, Diablo's power proved too much for him to bear, and, little by little, the warrior began to lose his humanity, becoming known all throughout the land as the Dark Wanderer.

A man named Marius tells of his travels with the Dark Wanderer, unaware of his true nature as Diablo until it was too late. In the tomb of Tal Rasha, what little remains of Aidan is consumed entirely by the demon inside him, and, free of his human bonds, the Lord of Terror sets about liberating his elder brothers, Baal and Mephisto.

You might think you can spare Aidan of his fate by instead playing as either the Rogue or Sorcerer class in the first game. Unfortunately, they both meet equally grim fates by the time of Diablo II, for the strength of Hell is far more than a mere few humans can hope to contain.
