8 Video Game Levels That Destroyed Your Childhood

2. Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double - Lightning Lookout

Crash bandicoot high road ps1
Rare

Now normally I would not have a single bad word to say about Rare pre-Microsoft purchase but boy howdy does Lightning lookout sting my entire being. It is hands down the hardest level across the entire Donkey Kong Country Franchise and has become infamous amongst the fanbase for its horrific gimmick.

You see in this level, you're not just fighting against the forces of King K. Rool, but you're battling nature itself. At random intervals lightning will strike down from the sky, usually right where you're standing, thus proving that there may indeed be a God but he's a spiteful bastard who wants you dead.

The level is hard enough without these infuriating moments, but thanks to these lightning strike lashings you're going to need to be able to balance platforming, enemy dodging, and now a one-hit kill hazard that sticks to you like stink. It's abysmally hard compared to the rest of the game and sticks out less like a sore thumb, and more a shocking middle finger.
