8 Video Game Sequels That Changed EVERYTHING
7. Resident Evil 7
The Resident Evil franchise, much like the many T, G, and Tricell-born viruses that adorn the series, is one that is forever mutating into something new. Just when you think you've got a grasp on what it means to be a Resident Evil game, Capcom comes along and sweeps the rug out from under us with a brand new gameplay setting.
We all thought we had things pegged after the Resident Evil 2, that the static camera angles and tensely drawn-out horror were going to be the franchise's bread and butter, but then the big bad binbag known as Nemesis came along and punched players in the face and shot the series full of adrenaline.
Resi 4 then blew everything out of the water with a new over-the-shoulder perspective and focus on action. Resident Evil 5 added in co-op, and 6 decided to give us every single idea it could despite never asking itself if it should, and then we came to Resident Evil 7.
To say that this shift from 3rd to 1st person was a bit of a departure is like saying Elon Musk is quite rich, something of a massive understatement. This put you directly in the now piss-soaked shoes front and center, and as such meant the action and horror were that much more personal. This was Capcom refusing to coast and saw them actively re-invent the wheel while the franchise was still bloody rolling. Credit to them for taking such a risk so late in a franchise's lifespan.
