8 Video Game Sequels That Changed EVERYTHING
6. Dynasty Warriors 2
As a stalwart fan of the Dynasty Warriors franchise, I can say that we Koei-Tecmo Mad-heads are an odd bunch.
For a start, I think we're probably one of the only fanbases that get absolutely rabid about what is essentially the same game being released over and over yet still treating it like it's a brand new experience because they finally added in that one general that you wanted to play as.
Secondly, we also seem to get very annoyed whenever the very specific formula of "grind your fingers into dust mashing buttons" gets messed with, even when the attempts at innovation were good on paper. Take for example Dynasty Warriors 6 which attempted to give everyone access to infinite combos or Dynasty Warriors 9 which looked to take the series to open-world pastures. We all hated these changes as they were just too radical and poorly implemented to appeal.
However, we must not forget that if it weren't for radical departures we wouldn't even have this gloriously OTT series, as the original Dynasty Warriors was a Fighting Game! Here players would see the DW take on Tekken with characters slowly, very slowly in fact, attempt to beat the skeletons out of each other.
Going from that to huge levels filled with endless goons to dispatch in Dynasty Warriors 2 was genuinely shocking, as was the implementation of the combo and Musou system that empowered players to unparalleled levels. It was easy to believe these warriors of legend existed when you were turning everything that looked at them funny into myth.
