8 Video Game Sequels That Made You Say WHAT?!

Oh Driver 3, what a strange and confusing mess you were.

Coming off of the huge and rather unexpected success of the prior two games, hopes were incredibly high for the franchise, especially when it announced that it would be arriving with a third entry that would contain features, graphics, and physics way beyond it’s competitors.

However, that joy soon turned to disgusting goo in the mouths of many when the game stumbled out after numerous delays, clipped through the floor of the games industry, and got stuck in the nether before promptly shitting itself. A good game this was not.

However what really gives Driver 3 the big “What?” factor is thanks to its behind-the-scenes development story. After having money shoveled into the game, Atari was desperate for the title to annihilate the likes of GTA, even though they’d need to sell 4 million copies of the game to recoup their investments, and so figured that the best way to make their title a success story wasn’t to give the devs time to finish the title to a quality standard but simply buy positive reviews.

As GuruLarry pointed out in his brilliant breakdown of this game, gaming outlets were sent extremely early copies of the game in exchange for 9/10 reviews. In Atari’s mind, everyone was a winner, the outlets got their exclusives, they got their good reviews and the consumer?....ah f**k that guy.

When all of this came out, it made the glaring problems of Driver 3 much more than just those seen on the shoddy surface, because the greed and exploitative nature of Atari was laid bare for all to see.
