8 Video Game Side-Quests That Were Better Than The Main Story

7. Ranni's Questline - Elden Ring

Elden Ring Ranni
FromSoftware

As with any Fromsoftware title, the amount of gratification you get from the game's narrative is directly tied to how deep you want to dive into item descriptions, passing NPC dialogue, intricate details of character models, and of course its numerous and often convoluted side missions.

If you just go from boss to boss hacking and slashing your way through things, you might come out the other side of Elden Ring with a vague understanding of the plot (I think they were jealous of the lion man's tree house?) but you'll definitely be missing out on a lot of the finer points.

And things don't get much finer indeed than the Questline offered by Ranni The Witch, who not only tasks the player with a lengthy exploration of the map for secret items inside even more secret locations but also rewards the player with more information on the land that was, is and will come to be at your hand.

This all culminates in the option to forgo the stock endings of the game entirely and embark on a new and, as you might expect for traveling off the beaten path, incredibly challenging finally run towards the end of the game. Oh, and you may end up being married by the end of things.

However the reward for completing the quest before this final encounter is a weapon that will make the heart of any Dark Souls purist sing aloud, the Dark Moon Greatsword, and even if it's not the "best" weapon in the game the sheer thrill of finding it in this title is almost reward enough.
