8 Video Game-To-Movie Adaptations That Get Way Too Much Hate
5. Double Dragon
Set in a post-apocalyptic, earthquake-ravaged version of Los Angeles, Double Dragon tries its best to provide a political message. And while it fails spectacularly on a broader front, it actually does a pretty stellar job handling some smaller moments of social satire.
Commercials for Jack City sell their fashion-forward lift devices to citizens who worry that the quakes won't just wreck their homes, but also throw off their design scheme. Vanna White and George Hamilton cameo as themselves, but playing a typically vapid pair of news anchors, while a pre-controversy Andy Dick (also playing himself) slums it as the weatherman giving the daily smog alert.
For a kids movie, there was an abundance of these satirical bits playing out on the perimeter, which, believe it or not, actually makes this a film worth re-watching.
The big picture stuff is more hit-or-miss. The filmmakers went a little far with the steampunk-ish aesthetic - Billy and Jimmy Lee's car is literally fueled by garbage - and the film would've been better had it steered away from the grim fantasy stylings that were de rigueur in the mid-'90s. But they nailed some of the smaller elements of the Nintendo world, right down to the music used during the fight scenes, which are both comical and well-choreographed.
Also...Alyssa Milano is in short shorts for the majority of the runtime. Game, set, match: Double Dragon.
