8 Video Game-To-Movie Adaptations That Get Way Too Much Hate
6. Wing Commander
Wing Commander is the rare example of a video game adaptation being directed by the actual creator of the video game, Chris Roberts, which ensures that things don't stray too far away from the source material. Roberts' oversight, along with an extremely likable cast, make the movie more entertaining than it probably should be.
For a very brief window in the late '90s/early '00s, inserting either Matthew Lillard and Freddie Prinze Jr into your movie was a surefire way to draw a huge teen crowd into theaters. In fact, these two momentary teen heartthrobs were in five movies together over the span of five years.
And it's clear the two have great onscreen chemistry. In fact, the most redeeming parts of this movie - which even the most cynical viewer should be able to appreciate - are the various relationships and character studies involving the principal cast.
The action sequences are...there...but it's almost impossible to tell them apart.
There's also some serious Star Trek mimicry happening throughout this movie - the first of which is an obvious Scotty clone, who shows up five minutes in - and that's largely a detriment. Because it's those borrowed elements that drive the story. And the story is awful.
But again, anyone who watches movies more for characterizations than stories will find plenty to like here.
