8 Video Game-To-Movie Adaptations That Get Way Too Much Hate
2. Silent Hill
Horror movies, like video game adaptations, don't usually get much love from people outside their specific fanbases. The prospect of merging those two genres, then, might sound like a recipe for the worst movie ever. And if you listen to the majority of critics, that's pretty much what Silent Hill turned out to be.
Which is ridiculous. Especially considering that most other adaptations get dragged through the mud for distancing themselves too far from the source material. Silent Hill, on the other hand, fully embraces it.
For all the qualms about the film supposedly crapping on the most iconic parts of the video game series (cough, Pyramid Head showing up for no reason, cough), this is one of the more painstakingly crafted films to come out of the genre, with director Christophe Gans' love of the original games oozing out of the screen at every turn.
Not only was Gans a legit fan, he also received oodles of input from the Silent Hill development team all the way through production. Hell, he even used parts of the original game's soundtrack in the movie!
So it's a little weird for gamers to have such a problem with the film's very limited failings as an adaptation.
Silent Hill is a tense, stylish, appeasing adaptation that achieves some genuine scares along the way, the kind that will stick with you long after you've finished the film. What more could you ask for?
