8 Video Games Fans Didn't Deserve
3. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons Of Liberty
In 1998, Hideo Kojima deserved our pity because of the overwhelming fan demand for a Metal Gear Solid sequel. Kojima didn't want to make one despite the critical acclaim.
However, that demand inevitably resulted in his 2001 sequel, the first "postmodern video game" - Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty.
Play as MGS1's protagonist Solid Snake? Only in the first two hours of the game within a tanker the marketing pitched as the focal setting - it wasn't. Then, the player takes control of Raiden, whose long blond hair and "feminine" appearance were triggers for fans of Solid Snake's gruff stoicism.
Political commentary/existential philosophy? Consider the ominous control and selective distribution of information that leads consumers into funding a shadow organization secretly ruling the world. (Makes one uncomfortably aware whilst sitting on the couch playing the game, eh?)
Fourth-wall breaks? Guiding voice "Colonel Campbell" is actually an AI that reveals how Raiden’s virtual-reality training simulations are similar to those the player used for practice in MGS1. Also, this AI orchestrated Raiden's mission to mimic the terrorist incident from MGS1... with the goal of creating a new Solid Snake. (You know, the player/Raiden.)
Between the game and the player, who is playing whom?
