8 Video Games Fans Didn't Deserve

2. God Of War (2018)

#notmykratos, am I right?!

Jokes aside...

Other than a few prequels and interquels to fill in the gaps, God of War did not continue Kratos's story until 8 years after the debut of God of War III.

Cory Barlog, director of God of War II, returned in 2018 to drop Kratos into Norse mythology. No more Ancient Greek trappings or a revenge narrative ending with the destruction of anything between Kratos and his goal.

Kratos has married and started a family again, and another wife's death begins his journey... but not to kill a god, not to seek vengeance, not to enact nihilistic rage.

But so that he and his son Atreus can scatter Faye's ashes atop the peak of the highest mountain in Midgard, inadvertently and finally beginning a genuine father-son relationship.

"Ugh, but he's not alpha anymore - he's too chill and quiet and restrained."

Yes. That's the point.

A mature comeuppance of sorts for fans of the original games, God of War reminds players how they've - hopefully - grown beyond glorifying violence for violence's sake. Players have to live with the consequences of their actions, whilst also trying to spare others from repeating the same mistakes.
