While a video game might be able to be boiled down into a primary dialogue between code and player for the sake of entertainment, if we were listening to our hearts, and possibly getting a bit too emotional, video games are about establishing a connection.

Whether it's telling an epic story of Good and Evil, or pushing players through an adrenaline-soaked race against time, video games are tapping into an emotional state in order to make you feel.

Happiness, sadness, fear, even revulsion, video games grab you by the emotions and squeeze hard, and as such it's easy to form strong bonds between fans and their favourite games that go way beyond just being the title they won't shut up about.

Some people live these games, dressing as their favourite characters, swiping up any affiliated merch, and in some rare cases, going above and beyond to save video games in ways that even the title's creators couldn't envision.

These dedicated few spend hour after hour either bettering a release with fan made patches and content, promoting it online in order to keep player bases from dwindling, or in some extreme cases even rescuing a game from development hell and finally bringing it to market.

These are the people who never gave up on their games.

8. Skullgirls

Skullgirls was always going to be an ambitious project. Creating a fighting game on its own in a market pretty much ruled by two or three literal big hitters is a huge risk, as there's every chance that your fists and fury is going to just be a flop and a face-plant.

However, Skullgirls then added on meticulous hand-drawn aesthetics on top to really put the dev team under pressure.

Yet the never say never attitude of the team meant that Skullgirls not only made it to retail but also made a sizeable dent in the market, drawing fans in with those wonderful graphics and backing it up with solid mechanics. However, it wasn't all good news as unfortunately the original dev team was let go while developing the first DLC for the game due to monetary issues.

Detailing the events on social media and news outlets, it seemed that both production on the DLC and indeed online support for the title was as good as KO'd, however, that's when the fans stepped in.

With a huge showing of support via Kickstarter and other funding events, over eight times the cost of development for the DLC was raised, meaning that not only did fans get to play as a new character, but also got their hands on four more fighters, as well as Story Modes for each of them!

What could have been a sad kazoo moment turned out to be a big band march the whole world was singing along with.
