4. 343 Guilty Spark - Halo: Combat Evolved

While the franchise nowadays might be struggling to elevate itself back to the upper echelons of the genre, there is no denying the sheer heft and impact of the original Halo. Thanks to a now actually working remaster collection, players can still experience the title that so many others tried and failed to beat in its full glory.

However Halo is not a perfect game, in fact, one character and the levels associated with them actively sought to destroy everything the game was up until that point, so much so that many decry these interactions as some of the worst in the series! I'm speaking of course about 343 Guilty Spark and those bloody library sections.

Nothing in gaming since has so expertly crushed the pacing, atmosphere, and enjoyment of a title quite like these moments, as being funneled through a boring copy-paste section with confusing layouts, waves of rough as bricks enemies, and doing so to the soundtrack of a smary AI with way too much sass for it's own good is a combination that should be used on War Criminals to make them confess.

Bad level design, terrible pacing, and an annoying character all rolled into one. Is there any wonder that people seem to always try and skip over talking about this section when championing the original Halo?
