5. Mafia III - Racism

This one is fairly obvious and has been the topic of many articles. With an African-American protagonist and the game taking place in 1968 in the American South, racism was too promising an issue not to tackle.

Lincoln Clay encounters it on a daily basis, either when entering a store, talking to the police or listening to the radio. The player will fall victim to profiling and suspicion, despite not doing anything criminal. Well, at least at that particular moment.

The open-world structure of the game is only open to some extent, as the character's freedom is limited as well. With that Mafia III succeeds in putting the player in the shoes of an oppressed individual.

Some gamers described the game as "catharic", as it allows them to punish racist characters with actual violence. The gamer is able to resist white supremacy, physically destroy it with its own hands, which must be somewhat rewarding for those experiencing it in real life.
