8 Video Games That Changed Due To Fan Backlash

2. Assassin's Creed Odyssey

It was a strange sight to look at Assassin's Creed: Odyssey for the first time as this was the series effectively taking the last shreds of realism that it carried and shelving them completely. This was as fantastical and over the top a title as you could expect and many were worried that it simply would feel like a shallow imitator to the crown. While the game did have its flaws it was still received well by critics and fans. Well that was all apart from one quite huge oversight.

In the DLC pack Legacy of the First Blade, Shadow Heritage, you are effectively forced into a hetrosexual relationship at the end because of decision by Ubisoft to showcase you with your child. The decision was made to try and show how the actions of the player impacted the bloodline of the Assassins, but this caused issues for anyone who chose to either ignore the romance, or play the game as a gay protagonist.

It’s not like the choices weren’t in the game either, with options being presented to the player often and frequently.

To combat the backlash, Ubisoft tweaked the ending to include a line that explains why the choice to have a child was made, and remove the romantic closing shot at the end.

Many said it wasn’t as much change as they would have hoped, but it’s good that an effort was made to fix this issue.
