8 Video Games That Escaped Development Hell (But Shouldn’t Have)
6. Rogue Warrior
Time In Development Hell: 3 Years
You might think you were in safe enough hands with Bethesda, but even they can publish some stinkers. One particular standout turd was Rebellion's development of Rogue Warrior, a game that started life as a tactical shooter which would have multiplayer co-op and lots of unique maps. It sounded so promising, and then things got suspiciously quiet...
When it re-emerged after a couple of years, most of the unique features had been stripped out, the game engine had been changed and it had morphed into a bog-standard shooter with very little - other than violence and swearing - to set it apart. The setting had also been changed from present day to 1986, and Mickey Rourke was brought on to voice the gruff main character.
The released game was roundly panned for its short length (around two hours), buggy gameplay and a general lack of polish. Rourke’s excessive swearing was a high/low light for some people, depending on their tolerance for creative cussing, but either way, Rogue Warrior was not a game befitting its time in the oven.
