8 Video Games That Escaped Development Hell (But Shouldn’t Have)
1. Aliens: Colonial Marines
Time In Development Hell: 6 Years
Your friends at Gearbox once again, bringing you a game that's an utter shambles in more ways than one. They made a big fuss initally about how CM would be an official sequel - set between Aliens and Alien 3 - and that it would be a game fans would adore.
The game kept getting delayed but Gearbox head Randy Pitchford kept insisting everything was fine, and gameplay videos backed him up. It finally got released in 2013, and fans are still recoveringby; it was a buggy, unfinished mess with terrible AI and a story so poorly constructed it would have been tossed out of a fan fiction forum. The released game was clearly cobbled together at the last minute and the story of what happened during development only got juicer.
It quickly became clear Gearbox had been up to some shady activity during development, including collecting cheques from Sega for working on CM but secretly diverting resources to Borderlands. It also became clear other studios did most of the work building the game, and soon lawsuits and accusations flew everywhere.
The mess is still ongoing, but at least Alien: Isolation gave fans the game they deserved.
