8 Video Games That Reward You For Breaking Them
2. Super Smash Brothers Melee – Play As Master Hand
Back in the early years of Smash Brothers before data mining and DLC, rumours abounded of amazing playable characters unlocked under super convoluted circumstances. Gamers used to spread stories about unlocking Sonic and Tails in Smash Bros. Melee, or finding King K. Rool in the Nintendo 64 version - there were all kinds of incredible (and sadly fake) secrets. Turns out, however, that there is one more playable character tucked away in Melee.
To access it, all you've got to do is break the game. Though the exact mechanics behind what happens are complicated, essentially the player forces the game to receive multiple inputs at once, which causes it to choose the default input: Zero.
Zero also happens to be Master Hand's input, and is usually not accepted, but forcing multiple inputs, however, bypasses this condition.
By using two controllers to choose the "name entry" field at the same time as pressing back, players set the input to the default variable. If a character slot is free when this is done, the game loads Master Hand into the free slot and he is playable by using controller port three. Pretty cool, right?
