8 Video Games That Tragically Wasted Their Genius Premise

3. Grand Theft Auto Online

Although Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto series isn't exactly unfamiliar with multiplayer €“ it finally took the plunge in GTA IV €“ it has remained fairly competent due to bugs and limitations. Dropping multiple player controlled criminals into a sandbox where anything goes can be quite challenging especially when you don't get it right the first time. Rockstar promised to not only get it right, but also expand on it beyond measurement with Grand Theft Auto V's upcoming online portion called GTA Online. Players could jump in and wage street wars against each other. Or band together to form crews and engage in their own Hollywood-style heists and celebrate afterward. Or simply paint the town red for all they care. Simply put, the sky was the limit with GTAV's online space. Sadly, it don't go as well as planned. On launch, GTA Online was ransacked by bugs that prevented players from saving their loadouts or even loggin on and by cheaters acting like real world criminals in a simulated criminal underworld. if Rockstar had truly moved Heaven and Earth just trying to launch the mode, the developer would have to go beyond the effort just to fix these problems. Yet both the developer and its game just couldn't seem to catch a break, $500,000 bribe be damned. Fortunately, GTA Online is doing so much better now that Rockstar has eliminated most of these problems. But it was a bumpy ride to get there, and the premise suffered a great deal along the way.
