8 Video Games Where The True Ending Is The Bad Ending
1. Koudelka
Koudelka is one of those games that's so brilliantly weird that I'm astounded it didn't get more interest in the years following its release.
While it might not have set the survival horror world on fire with obvious cribbing from the likes of Resident Evil, its battle system, off-the-rails storyline, and of course its "hey do you like discount voice acting because I've got a SALE ON BROTHER!" make it a curio well worth exploring.
It's also bizarrely connected to another cult classic RPG series in the form of Shadow Hearts! And how are the titles connected I hear you ask? Well they are linked by the player sucking and failing at their one task in Koudelka of course!
To better explain, across Koudelka you'll come to know the tale of Partrick and Elaine, lovers who were torn apart when Elaine was murdered after thieves broke into their home.
Now I can't even begin to imagine the pain Patrick felt after losing his partner, but his decision to try and resurrect her using forbidden magic "Pet Cemetary" style was questionable at best. This allowed monsters to infect the mansion which the game is set in and ultimately tasks the player with putting Elaine to rest permanantly.
Yet if you manage to get the "bad" ending of the game, you'll see the heroes defeated while Elaine ascends to the heavens above in a new form, which Shadow Hearts picks up from and uses to establish why magic and monsters are now more prevalent in their world.
It's a neat setup if nothing else, and arguably we got a better game out of a canon "bad" ending than Koudelka ever was!
