8 Ways The Gaming Industry Can Improve

2. Optimised Game Sizes

Two hundred and thirty-one gigabytes.

No that's not the number of times The Rolling Stones played their "last ever show" but the actual file size of the Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare at one point in time, which thanks to updates to it's Warzone feature ballooned the already hungry title to incredulous size and forced many gamers to ask themselves a question they never had before needed to.

"How the hell am I even going to fit this on my Hard Drive?"

Unfortunately thanks to the new leaps in technology this isn't merely an isolated case what with games now averaging one hundred gigabytes as a base install size, and thanks to expansions and updates this is only ever going to take up more real estate. With these gargantuan file sizes comes some obvious issues, and also some rather lazy and even shady practices.

The obvious is that you're going to only be able to play 3-4 games on your console at any one time meaning your actual library of games is much smaller than your download history would dictate, but the shady and stinky issues come from the fact that some publishers appear to be doing this on purpose.

To better explain some clever souls looked into these monolithic installs and found examples of poor optimization and uncompressed files bloating the downloads immensely, and some have linked this to a desire to monopolize your hard drive.

Think about it, if you have to remove two or three games to make room for one more, then your actual choice of games to play is limited and likely focused towards the new big bad boy you've spent a day downloading, thus capturing your digital real estate and your attention in a much easier fashion. Pretty gross right.
