8 Worst Video Game Mission Types Done RIGHT
3. Forced Stealth - Mr Freeze Fight - Batman: Arkham City
There's nothing quite as jarring as a video game suddenly putting on the brakes and saying "oh sorry mate you got spotted so now instead of that triggering a battle, it's an instant game over".
Cool, glad I brought the dips to this party of sadness.
And yet, for some unknown reason, developers love to place this weight around the necks of players and lead them face-first through the horse stables after "Laxative Hay Day", constantly ruining their good times with ham-fisted stealth sections. Worst of all they often crop up out of nowhere and in games that are severely lacking in mechanics to make these moments enjoyable or downright functional. It's such a shame as well because it's missions like these that actively ruin the wider perception of stealth games as a whole, as who would want to buy into an experience that is 100% stealth when sections like this are delivered with such lack of care?
Thankfully though Batman: Arkham City is here to show others how such an approach to forced stealth can be fun, tense, and engaging, which it does through the boss battle against Mr. Freeze. Now I know that some players will approach the Arkham games with more stinging left hooks over stealthily moving from the shadows, but going toe to toe with Senior Fridge will leave you with a frostbitten bum cheek as he'll kick your ass into the Ice Age.
As Freeze learns your patterns of attack you need to vary up your angles and methods in order to take him down, and a lot of these require on the fly stealth! Darting behind him, popping up from grates, swinging from the rafters, you'll need to be on your toes and out of sight if you want to beat this baddie, and thanks to this being so utterly refreshing it makes what is a forced stealth section feel entirely up to the player in how to approach things.
