9 "Hated" Video Games You Should Play In 2020
2. Sea Of Thieves
Rare are easily one of the best developers in gaming history. Responsible for everything from Banjo-Kazooie to Conker's Bad Fur Day, them getting lapped up by Microsoft to make avatars and Kinect tie-ins was nothing short of a travesty.
Then they were finally let out to play... only to drop Sea of Thieves, a game bursting with charm and potential, yet capitalising on absolutely none of it.
See, Sea of Thieves landed on the wrong side of a game built with the longterm in mind. Things like telling other players to man the sails, use telescopes to mark where you should head or fire cannonballs at other vessels was a blast... but you'd seen it all in 20 minutes.
Tied in with the then-new Game Pass, so many of us got the free trial, had their fill and never went back.
Today though, Sea of Thieves is a VERY content-rich pirate sim. Adopting a rollout model that updates every single month, everything from arena-style PVP combat to fishing, cooking and TONS of side-quests have been plugged in.
All updates are free, and Rare's signature charm comes through in every animation. Customisation is as rich as ever, but now you have a means to dive in and accrue the currency to spec your pirate from top to bottom.
It took almost a full year for Sea of Thieves to be outwardly recommendable, but as a multiplayer experience - or even a lone wolf trying to survive - there's nothing else like it.
