9 Best Nintendo Spin-Off Video Games - Ranked

2. Super Smash Bros.

Mario Kart 8 Bowser
Nintendo

Super Smash Bros. is the ultimate answer to those watercooler 'who would win between X and X' conversations. Featuring a packed roster of Nintendo's most popular characters, Super Smash Bros. has become one of the most popular fighting games for many reasons, but mostly because of its excellent multiplayer.

It's remained successful in the fighting genre when many others have gone to pasture, because while it doesn't have the gore of Mortal Kombat, it has pretty unique gameplay. Most games at the time used health bars and side-scrolling mechanics, while Smash Bros. tinkered with those. It added platforming elements that Nintendo has used since its beginning, and instead of wearing down your opponent's health, players must raise damage ratios until one is knocked out of the screen.

Similarly, each character does not feel like a copy paste with a different skin but has unique moves and strategies surrounding them. Aside from that, featuring beloved characters from both Nintendo and now third party companies like Sega (Sonic) or Konami (Snake) only adding to the interesting possibilities, setting it apart from most generic fighters.
