2. Severed
Imagine Skyrim's combat, Fruit Ninja and Guacamelee's art style, because that's almost what Severed is.
Initially debuting on the PS Vita, Severed is only playable in handheld mode thanks to a need for touch controls - but they're some of the most well utilised and enjoyable in the medium. Casting you as Sasha, a girl who's lost her arm and then found a whopping great demon sword, you then set about exploring a series of dungeons and forest areas.
Being developed by Guacamelee's Drinkbox studio, things never get too dark, as instead you're tasked with swipe-attacking in the right direction, blocking various attacks with taps, parrying and slicing off limbs at key times to form collectible upgrades and perk unlocks.
Severed's entire aesthetic is very much a continuation of Guacamelee's spiritual embellishment of Mexican folklore and Day of the Dead-influenced imagery. As such, though it's very easy to cast it aside as 'just a touchscreen game', there's far more to take in from such a talented developer.
