9 Cancelled Superhero Video Games That Would've Made Millions

3. Gotham By Gaslight

THQ

Another victim of THQ falling apart at the seams (and there were a lot of them, those guys were huge), Gotham By Gaslight was to be based on the DC novel of the same name, depicting a 19th Century Batman whose armour was heavily inspired by steampunk aesthetics such as whirring gears and industrial materials.

Thankfully, Warner Bros. Montreal did include a skin paying tribute to the costume in Arkham Origins, but it's a far cry from the actual game that was being put together by atmospheric maestros and F.E.A.R developers, Day 1 Studios. You can see the skin below: As THQ were on publishing duties, this one disappeared into a PR black hole, seemingly never to emerge, despite it already looking to have quite the identity. Fog cloaks the streets and Batman's imposing cape flows naturally across all his movements, accentuating the whole "watchful protector" shtick more than ever - it really could've been something special.

Check out the main menu above, as it's worth noting how the game was set to include a 'Play Now' option (which granted, could just be a quick load), potentially leading to a free-roam option around the smoggy streets. The control scheme was set to include buttons dedicated to slow motion, quick-fire grenades and a flashlight, setting it apart from Rocksteady's titles by mixing detective work with full-on explosive warfare.

It goes without saying that the Arkham series proved offshoots or one-offs can work far better than when they're tied to specific films, and Gotham by Gaslight has enough source material for a perfect canvas that would then afford a great developer enough freedom to pull it off.
