When it comes to modern gaming it can be incredibly tempting to go around killing anyone you come across just for the sake of it (and okay, because sometimes it can be pretty funny, too). The vast majority of games don't punish players for doing this, or they make it so certain important NPCs can never die. While this might avoid players being permanently denied access to certain quests and merchants, it does so by sacrificing realism and immersion.

Not Dark Souls. In Dark Souls, basically every single NPC can be killed. Nor do they take too kindly to the attempt, fighting back with everything they've got. If you do happen to try and kill someone, only to be killed in turn and regret the decision, don't worry: NPCs won't forget you. Instead they'll constantly be hostile, and can only be calmed down by requesting absolution at an obscure NPC for a steep price.

Killing an NPC is basically guaranteed to lock you out of something, whether that be a quest line, a merchant or someone from whom you can gain hints and learn spells. The lesson? Don't go round killing innocent people (except Lautrec...there's nothing innocent about him).
