One of Undertale's most unique features is that it's possible to go through the entire game without killing people. And in fact, this is actively encouraged, as there's a specific ending for completing the game as a "pacifist" and not horribly murdering anyone. Even a mixture of killing and sparing is better than straight out attempting to kill everything in sight.

If a player does decide to misbehave by killing every enemy and NPC they come up against, they'll be rewarded with a much less enjoyable experience than they would have had otherwise. For a start, the game's music is replaced by an irritating drone, plus you have to grind areas for ages in an attempt to clear every enemy.

Then there's the fact the game remembers that you killed everybody, even in repeat playthroughs, making it impossible to get the proper "True Pacifist" ending.
