9 Fan Theories That Save TERRIBLE Games

8. It Takes Place In The Mass Effect Universe - Anthem

There's a certain desperation that comes with any fan theory which repurposes a new IP inside of an existing one, but dammit if making Anthem a Mass Effect game wouldn't have made it a sight more interesting.

Anthem launched to wildly mixed reviews for its generic open-world structure, shallow, grind-centric gameplay, and utterly forgettable story.

Its flight and combat systems definitely had potential, though, and might've had an easier time getting off the ground if BioWare tethered it to their most beloved franchise.

It's an oft-repeated theory that Anthem indeed began life as a new Mass Effect game, what with franchise producer Casey Hudson supervising development.

Leading up to its release, many also theorised that the planet Anthem is set on, Coda, was actually going to be the mysterious planet which the Normandy crashed on at the end of Mass Effect 3, albeit thousands of years in the future.

Even though this was never confirmed in the game itself, it's certainly fun to think about, and in the very least makes Anthem feel more relevant than just... being quietly thrown on the ever-growing pile of spectacularly bungled AAA flops.
