9 Fan Theories That Save TERRIBLE Games
5. An Unknown Tragedy Caused Dante's Personality Transplant - Devil May Cry 2
Devil May Cry 2 is undeniably the worst of the five main entries into the franchise.
In addition to being way too easy and lacking the mechanical complexity of its beloved predecessor, the second game was raked over the coals by fans for giving Dante a totally unasked-for personality transplant, mutating him into a self-serious bore of a hero.
Precisely why Capcom felt inclined to suffocate Dante's cockiness and goofy attitude is anyone's guess, but it was definitely an awful decision.
While this might seem like grasping at straws, it nevertheless becomes a little easier to cope with Dante's temporary change in personality - as Devil May Cry 3 thankfully reversed it - by presuming that something awful happened to him between the two games which turned him into a dour mope.
Precisely what this incident is remains for fans to decide for themselves, but if you accept that Devil May Cry 2 is basically Dante in the middle of a depressive episode - one for which he apparently sought help before the next game - then the behind-the-scenes tinkering doesn't seem quite so inane.
