3. Sonya Blade - Mortal Kombat

Fair play to NetherRealm (then called Midway Chicago), they didn't go down the easily-accessible 'sex sells' route when first rolling out the now-legendary gore-focussed gameplay with Sonya. Instead, she started out as a perfectly in-proportion and athletically-built Kombatant; a green sports bra with matching leisure equipment essentially being the 'look' for her character across four main games, before an open military jacket costume took over across the PS2/Xbox generation. However, with the ninth instalment in 2011, MK was making its first mark on next-gen hardware outside of DC spin-off territory, and for that, well; for some reason Sonya ended up apparently having a trip to the breast augmentation clinic. Gone was the 'military leader off-duty' look, and in was a far more revealing and sex-focussed approach. You could see it coming across the last few games, but even NetherRealm realised they'd gone a bit too far with the needlessly revealing costumes, reining her back into more human proportions with 2015's Mortal Kombat X - although by then, this model of Ms. Blade had overshadowed everything that had gone beforehand.
