9 Image Changes That Totally Killed Your Favourite Video Game Characters

3. Sonic The Hedgehog (Sonic Boom)

Sonic And Knuckles The Hedgehog
Sega

Sonic started losing his core audience right around the time he first started going 3D back in 1996, and even when Sega tried everything from introducing the world to the dual pistol-slinging Shadow the Hedgehog to Sonic transforming into a bestial 'Were-hog' (yes, really), they never completely revamped the core 'version' of the blue blur.

That was... until Sonic Boom.

Designed to be a full-on media onslaught comprising a TV show and various games, Sonic Boom came with complete redesigns of all the main cast - the most noticeable of which being Sonic with athletically taped shoes and hands. And a scarf, because reasons.

Needless to say, the shows and games both bombed - with the latter being a glitchy, almost unplayable mess - forcing Sega to literally apologise to the fans, promising they'd make it up to them. Now in 2017 - 20 years after that first 3D attempt - we're getting Sonic Mania; a repackaged HD upgrade of the original games' best levels, replete with a smattering of additional ones by fan-modder Christian Whitehead.

An actual pixel-perfect 2D Sonic game?! You're out of your mind, Sega.
