Like a great band who rigidly stick to a formula album after album, it's always going to separate the people who absolutely adore hearing a perfected version of a certain thing, to those who just wish for a second the band in question would at least try something different. Well, as is becoming apparent with many of these titles and their constant sequels, Gears of War is something of another 'AC/DC of games' in that what it does is incredibly enjoyable, but you couldn't play it forever. Luckily developer Epic spaced the three core titles in the series apart enough so we didn't have to, although saying that due to the only real upgrade between games being the graphics, if you already had an issue with the controls of the kebab-legged space marine protagonists you weren't suddenly going to come on board. There's also the English typist's nightmare Gears of War: Judgment though, as apart from that weird-looking spelling it was the first title in the series to not be fully developed by Epic. Tinkering with what was a winning formula in terms of the controls it put us in control of two characters that by this point in the story were roundly hated by some. All in all Judgment has been almost completely forgotten about, so it's over to the future to see what new developer Black Tusk can bring to the corpse-laden table.
