9 Mediocre Video Games Made Awesome By Twists
4. Castlevania: Lords Of Shadow - Gabriel Is A Vampire
Castlevania is more popular than ever, thanks to the Neflix adaptation, but on the gaming front, it’s been six years since we saw a new title. Back in 2010, Konami decided to reboot this classic popular through Lords of Shadow, developed by MercurySteam.
Bringing in a new 3D gameplay approach, it received positive reviews but moving away from 2D proved highly divisive amongst Castlevania’s established fanbase. Even for more traditional fans though, its story proved quite exceptional.
Set in 1047, Shadows starred Gabriel Belmont, finding Earth under threat by the Lords of Shadow after they’ve cast a dark spell on it. Separating Earth from Heaven, deceased souls are now trapped in limbo, Gabriel’s wife Marie amongst them and evil creatures terrorise the lands.
Heeding Zobek’s advice, Gabriel sets out to obtain the God Mask, being informed this can resurrect her but its split between these Lords. After obtaining them, Zobek reveals himself as the third Lord, granted this power by Satan himself.
Gabriel defeats Satan but realises he cannot revive Marie, this Mask only allowing him to see through God’s eyes. Its an ending full of twists but undoubtedly, the post-credits held a more shocking revelation.
Cutting to the modern era, we discover Zobek finding Gabriel is still alive but has turned into a vampire. Not just any Vampire though, Dracula himself.
Whilst later DLC explains how this occurred, finding a Belmont had become Castlevania’s big bad proved quite shocking, setting a bold new premise within Lords Of Shadow 2.
