It might sound counter-intuitive, but JRPGs were better before any of the characters could talk. In a genre which pretty much relies on its storytelling, this is a pretty big indictment of the general standard of RPG voiceover work. Anyone who has played Final Fantasy X will be unconvincingly laughing in approval.

Things have improved somewhat since those days of woeful whistling, but not by much. JRPGs tend to come with the very worst of anime tropes, and the 'cute, cheeky sidekick' is probably the most unpalatable of them all. English voice-overs have not helped one iota.

Take Final Fantasy XIII-2's Mog. The ludicrous time-travelling narrative is a bag of toss as it is, but the fact it's interpreted through a magic wand-carrying stuffed sugarcat makes it pretty much interminable. A voice so hideous it can make you sterile caps it off, kupo.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
