6. Sacrifice The Human Race So You Can Be Happy - The Last Of Us

Naughty Dog's magnum opus from 2013 is a game so pristinely polished and put together, they could happily retire and their legacy would continue to write itself. Such high accolades come from the close of the game, where upon realising your companion Ellie must be killed to extract the appropriate tissue from her skull for a cure, you play as Joel and get... well... a little annoyed. After mowing through a ton of Firefly security (who don't forget, are mostly freedom fighters trying to develop the cure for mankind), you come face to face with the surgeons prepping Ellie for the end. There's then no choice other than turning the game off, as walking up to them sees Joel butcher the main doctor with a scalpel, before scooping up Ellie and making for the nearest exit. Right then and there, it sets up one of the most monumental endings of all time, where the formerly unconscious Ellie gets lied to to maintain Joel's relative innocence, all for the sake of putting the solution to his own loneliness over the salvation of the human race.
